Abstract

This study aims to explore the correlation between reading attitudes and reading achievement of students in English class. The research adopts a quantitative approach. The population consists of 69 students in the eleventh grade of Shailendra High School Palembang. The sample size is 30 students, determined through purposive sampling. Data collection instruments include a questionnaire to measure reading attitudes and a test to assess students' reading achievement in narrative texts. Data analysis is conducted using SPSS 23 for Windows. The research findings reveal that the average reading attitude score is 76.87, and the average reading achievement score is 69.5. The scatterplot graph indicates a positive correlation in this research. The calculated correlation coefficient suggests a moderate correlation, as it is 0.429. Data analysis through SPSS 23 for Windows yields a N. Sig value of 0.018. Since N. Sig < 0.05, the null hypothesis (H0) is rejected, and consequently, the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted. In conclusion, there is a positive correlation between reading attitudes and reading achievement among eleventh-grade students in the English class at Shailendra High School Palembang for the academic year 2023/2024.
