Abstract

This study aimed to explore the effectiveness of learning model with direct instruction model in improving the speaking ability of Vocational High School (SMK) students by conducting oral test to describe a place. This research was conducted in a school environment focusing on teaching English speaking ability. The research method used an experimental approach with a pre-test and post-test one group design. The research sample consisted of tenth grade TKJ students of Vocational High School PGRI PangkalanBalai academic years 2023/2024. Data were collected through speaking tests before and after the treatment. The speaking assessment was written in several assessments including Pronunciation, Vocabulary, Grammar and Fluency. The results of data analysis showed a significant improvement in the speaking ability of students who received learning through direct instruction model with the average pre-test score (47.23) and the average post-test score (64.3). This finding shows that the learning model with direct instruction were effective in improving the speaking ability of vocational students.
