Abstract

The study aimed to explore the strategies used by teachers at SD Negeri 29 Prabumulih, as well as the challenges they experienced when teaching English to young learners. The background of the study emphasized the importance of early English learning and the need for innovative teaching strategies to effectively engage young learners. This qualitative study employed a descriptive method, which included observation, interview, and documentation. Data were provided by two English teachers who taught fifth and sixth graders. Based on the findings, teachers applied various strategies to support young learners in developing their English skills, including look-and-say, association, questioning, narration, read-and-say strategies, as well as the use of games and media. However, several obstacles and challenges were identified, such as low student motivation, limited exposure to English, lack of self-confidence, and insufficient class time for English instruction. Although the available facilities were adequate, some teachers faced difficulties in utilizing them effectively. The study concluded that implementing a variety of engaging and context-based teaching strategies was essential to overcoming these challenges and enhancing young learners’ English skills.
