Abstract
The main problem in this study is that many students at SMP N 1 Rantau Panjang struggle with English listening comprehension due to limited listening classes and lack of access to authentic audio materials. This research aims to examine the effectiveness of using podcasts as a learning tool to improve students’ listening comprehension skills. The method used is a quantitative approach with a pre-experimental design involving one group pre-test and post-test. The sample consists of ninth-grade students selected through random sampling. Data were collected using structured listening tests before and after the podcast-based learning treatment. The results showed a significant improvement in students’ listening scores, with the average increasing from 48.71 to 85.29. The N-Gain score reached 0.71, which falls into the high category, and the t-test result showed a p-value of 0.000 < 0.05, indicating a significant effect. Therefore, it can be concluded that podcasts are effective as an English learning tool to enhance students’ listening comprehension. Podcasts provide flexible, authentic, and engaging learning experiences that help students improve their understanding of spoken English.
