Abstract

The purpose of this study is to determine how well the whole language approach works to raise students' reading proficiency in the tenth grade. The 60 students in the 10th grade at Assanadiyah Senior High School Palembang made up the study's population. They were split into two groups: the experimental group received instruction using the whole language technique, while the control group received instruction using the traditional method. Purposive sampling was the method employed by the researcher, who identified the control and experimental classes in addition to gathering samples for the study. The findings demonstrated that, in comparison to the control group, pupils in the experimental group significantly improved their vocabulary, reading comprehension, reading speed, and reading ability. This shows that the whole language method can be an effective alternative in learning to read. Keywords: whole language method, reading, effectiveness.
