Abstract

This study aims to examine the effectiveness of using children’s songs in enhancing English vocabulary acquisition among fourth-grade students at SDN 18 Belinyu and to identify differences in learning outcomes between students taught with children’s songs and those taught using conventional methods. A quasi-experimental design was employed, involving a pre-test and post-test control group. The total number of participants was 56 students, divided into two classes: Class IV A (28 students) served as the experimental group and was taught using children’s songs, while Class IV B (28 students) acted as the control group and received instruction through traditional methods. Vocabulary tests were administered before and after the intervention to assess students’ vocabulary progress. The results revealed a significant improvement in vocabulary acquisition in the experimental group compared to the control group. The post-test mean score of the experimental group was 62.46 (SD = 11.802), whereas the control group scored a lower mean of 53.86 (SD = 11.168), with a mean difference of 8.607 points. The t-test analysis showed that the calculated t-value (2.803) exceeded the critical value at the 5% significance level (1.674), and the significance level (2-tailed) was 0.007, which is below the threshold of 0.05. These findings indicate that there is a statistically significant difference in vocabulary learning outcomes between the two groups after receiving the treatment. Therefore, the use of children’s songs is recommended as an effective and engaging alternative instructional tool to support vocabulary acquisition in primary English language education. Keywords: Children’s songs, English vocabulary, language learning, primary school students.
