Abstract
This research aims to analyze the reading ability of fifth-grade students at SD Negeri 1 Mengulak in understanding local content. The study uses a descriptive qualitative method to explore how well students can read and understand texts, especially those that include elements from their local culture. Data were collected through classroom observations, interviews with students and teachers, and documentation. The results showed that students were more interested and motivated to read when the content was related to their everyday lives, such as local traditions, food, and places. These familiar topics helped students read more fluently and understand the meaning of the stories better. Teachers also supported learning by using pictures, simple explanations, and printed local stories. However, some students still struggled with unfamiliar words and needed extra help. Overall, local content made reading activities more meaningful, improved vocabulary, and helped students connect reading with their real-world experiences.
